The christening of a child brings a family together even in distant cities such as Corpus Christi, Texas. Mark and his family fly to the seashore site of Donna’s family. When the plane starts flying, Read asks, “Are we little now?” When the plane hits the runway to land, he says, “Are we driving now?”

I dress Carolyn in the christening dress that Mark and Donna had been christened in with their initials embroidered in the hem. With her godparents present at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Carolyn looks like a little puff of white clouds. Afterwards, there is a luncheon featuring pink and white cloths and flowers in the backyard. It is very fitting for a bright eyed, brown eyed baby.

When I return to my home, I take Read to the mall where a traveling petting zoo is installed. He almost gets out of the car, but decides the camel might get him. From the car he looks a long time at all the animals. Then he comments, “The baby elephant sure is big to be a baby.”

On a wintery day, eight and one half months after his birth, Thomas is christened in the same white suit as his father and brother. After the minister of the First United Methodist Church in Lufkin christens him Jane puts him up on her shoulder so all can see this fine boy. Thomas looks around, gives one of his big smiles and utters a big sigh—oh, his timing is perfect.
